Benefits of using the eRoom plug-in software
- The plug-in software is an optional enhancement for using webCafé on
your personal computer running a 32-bit edition of the Windows XP or
Windows Vista operating system.
- If you use Mac OS X or a 64-bit version of Windows; if you use the
Safari or Opera browsers; or if you are at a Wharton public or classroom
computer, you will not be able to use the plug-in software. (It's possible
that it may work on a Mac OS X computer which runs Windows under Boot
Camp, Virtual PC or Parallels, but we have not tested that configuration).
- The plug-in software adds the ability to copy and paste
files or folders between My Computer/Windows Explorer windows
and webCafé (except with Firefox under
Vista). When using Internet Explorer, the file copying automation
can also include drag and drop features (again, Vista will require
this to be enabled). The
plug-in also provides spell-checking and formatting features (boldface/colors/hyperlinks)
in comments, notes, and announcements.
- Other than those features, webCafé works
the same way with and without the plug-in.
Is
my plug-in software active?
While logged in to webCafé, allow your mouse
pointer to hover over the webCafé logo. A pop-up
tip will appear showing the eRoom software version number as well as
the words "with
plug-ins" (active) or "without plug-ins" (browser-only,
plug-in inactive).

The
plug-in software is never active (and cannot be installed) in Wharton's
public computing labs, group study rooms, webmail stations
or classrooms.
Installing and activating the eRoom plug-in software
for use with webCafé
You can obtain the plug-in software (available for Windows only) through
either of these methods:
- Recommended: You can download an installer file, ClientSetup.exe,
from this
page (will pop up in a new window).
- Also possible (works for some configuration): You
can install the plug-in automatically by pressing the my
member info button on your my eRooms page.
Use this method if you are logged in as an Administrator or Power
User on your computer.

This will bring up your member record, which includes a "Use
the eRoom plug-in software" checkbox.
Check that checkbox and
press OK (which is
located above the checkbox, near the logo):

You'll then be prompted
to download and install the software.
Note: You may need to confirm that it is safe
to install the eRoom client (see our FAQ
article for an illustration).
When
installation completes, you may be prompted with an "eRoom
Warning" window.
Answer Yes to this.
The plug-in should now be active.
Downloading from webCafé using the plug-in
version of these steps - requires Flash)
- In a webCafé folder, check the checkboxes
shown to the left of one or more file or folder icons, then press
the copy button
on the toolbar below the files. (To expose checkboxes if they are not
shown, click the commands button.)

- Now, paste into a My Computer or Windows Explorer window (by right-clicking
on the surface of the window):
- You can also use the Edit menu Paste command; the files you checked
will be copied.
- Note: Non-file items in webCafé,
such as calendar entries or discussion postings, cannot be copied
to your computer. To save a copy of these items, save the web
page you are viewing using your browser.
If you use Windows XP or have performed the optional
IE7/Vista configuration steps, instead of using copy/paste you
can drag and drop files and folders in webCafé to
your desktop, or to a My Computer or Windows Explorer window. This is
easiest when you have both your browser window (showing a webCafé folder
page) and your My Computer/Windows Explorer window (showing a folder
on your computer) open, but with neither window maximized. It's also
possible to copy and paste, rather than dragging and dropping; the instructions
for downloading multiple files, shown below,
also work for downloading a single file via copy/paste.
To drag a file or folder from webCafé and drop
it into My Computer or Windows Explorer window:
- Locate the item you wish to drag, placing the mouse pointer over
it.
Next, hold down the left mouse button and drag the item to your
desktop or to a My Computer or Windows Explorer window.

- You can also copy and paste, rather than dragging and dropping.
- Note: Only files and folders can be downloaded to your
computer via drag/drop, not discussion postings or calendar events.
You can download discussion postings and calendar events using offline
reading.
Uploading
to webCafé using
the plug-in
- You can upload multiple files at once by selecting them in your
computer, then dragging/dropping all at once into a webCafé folder
or attachment area.
Instead of dragging and dropping, you can click Ctrl-C after selecting
multiple files and then press the paste button on a folder or attachment
area.
- You can also copy and paste multiple files if they are in the
same folder. On
your computer, put the files in a folder (first creating a new folder
if necessary), and then drag and drop the folder into webCafé as
described above. You will be prompted:

Press the No button. (The "connected set" option is useful
only for specific interrelated files such as an HTML file and associated
graphics. In that case only, press Yes.)
After you make the selection, the plug-in will begin the upload.
When it is complete, a folder with the same name as the one you are
dragging/dropping will be created in webCafé,
containing the uploaded files.
If you use Windows XP or have performed the optional
IE7/Vista configuration steps, you can drag and drop files and
folders from your desktop, or from a My Computer or Windows Explorer
window, into webCafé. This is easiest when
you have both your browser window (showing a webCafé folder
page) and your My Computer/Windows Explorer window (showing a folder
on your computer) open, but with neither window maximized.
To drag a file or folder from My Computer or Windows Explorer window:
- Select the icon of the item you wish to drag by left-clicking it.
The icon will be highlighted.

- Hold down the left mouse button and drag the item to your webCafé browser
window.
