eRoom Plug-In Setup

The optional eRoom plug-in software enhances your use of webCafé, adding rich-text editing for comments and (in most cases) additional automation of file uploads and downloads. See our plug-in tutorial for more details.

To use the eRoom plug-in, you need to have one of the following browsers:

and one of the following operating systems:

Warning: The eRoom plug-in cannot be installed in Wharton's public computing labs, classrooms or group study rooms. While you may be prompted to choose or upgrade the plug-in software, please note that the current plug-in software cannot be automatically installed as part of the webCafé or facultyCafé login process. Instead, use the instructions below to install the plug-in.

Installation instructions (same for first-time setup, reinstall, or upgrade of a previously installed plug-in)

  1. Click here to download a file, ClientSetup_7.43a.exe, from the Help & Support/FAQs area of our site.

  2. Choose to save the ClientSetup_7.43a.exe file to a folder on your computer.

  3. Locate the ClientSetup_7.43a.exe file you saved and double-click it. (If you are not logged in as Administrator, you may be prompted for an an administrator password; another alternative is to right-click the ClientSetup_7.43a.exe program and choose Run as Administrator.) Installation will start. During the installation, it is OK to give your permission (choose "Yes" or "OK") to questions which may arise during the installation.

  4. After the eRoom installation program finishes, you must restart your computer even if not prompted to reboot.

  5. If you normally need to adjust your firewall settings manually when installing new software, make sure that ERClient7.exe is allowed to use your Internet connection.  (Windows Firewall and many others will do this automatically during Step 7.)

  6. Recommended step for IE running on Windows Vista or Windows 7: To enable drag-and-drop downloads with the eRoom plug-in software under Windows 7 or Windows Vista-based computer -- or to reduce the number of pop-up prompts asking to allow use of the plug-in -- perform the recommended configuration for Internet Explorer as described in this Help & Support/FAQs article. (If you skip this step, multi-file copy and paste should work, but not drag-and-drop downloads; also if this step is skipped you will see pop-up security confirmations upon entering an eRoom and with each file download.)

  7. Skip this step if you use Firefox 3.6.x:

    a) Go to your My eRooms page. On Internet Explorer 8 or 9, make sure that Compatibility View has been selected by clicking the gray "broken document" icon next to the refresh button in the address bar; that icon needs to be blue, not gray, to indicate that Compatibility View is on. (If the Compatibility View icon is already blue, no need to click it -- doing so will make it gray again).

    b) On Internet Explorer 9 only, open the Tools menu using the gear icon on far right or Alt-X keyboard shortcut. Go into the Safety menu; if the "ActiveX Filtering" option is checked, select it in the Safety menu to change it to un-checked. (If "ActiveX Filtering" is not checked, make no change.)

    c) Close all web browser windows.

  8. Return to your My eRooms page and log in if necessary. Now, press my member info to make sure the "Use eRoom plug-in software" checkbox is active, then click the OK button near the top of the Member Information page. (If that checkbox is not shown, close the browser and then log in again.)

At this point, if you are prompted to "Update the eRoom plug-in software", ignore that prompt. Instead look elsewhere on the screen for a question about allowing or trusting the add-on or plug-in; depending on your browser and OS this may appear at the top of the page, near the bottom of the page, or in a pop-up window. Choose the option which confirms that you want to allow the plug-in to work with your browser. After doing this the first time, you may need to go to my member info additional times to re-check the "Use eRoom plug-in software" checkbox; eventually it should stick.

The eRoom plug-in software should now be active. If your plug-in did not become active under Internet Explorer 9, and you are sure you did Steps 1-6, it may be worth repeating Step 7, clicking Compatibility View twice to ensure that it is blue and not gray, and then repeating Step 8.
